Out of Darkness: Services for our mining community

Wednesday 11th October will see a special Day of Prayer to honour the mining community and its legacy in Bishop Auckland and to give thanks for the opening of the Mining Art Gallery. St Mary’s Church will be part of this and will be holding a Service of Peace at 2pm on this day, where the stained glass windows by Tom McGuinness will be a focus point. Light refreshments will be provided after the service. Everyone is welcome to attend. Please contact us if you’d like to know more.

Following the service here on the afternoon, there will also be an Evening of Thanksgiving at 7.30pm at St Anne’s Church in the market place featuring singer-songwriter Gareth Davies-Jones who has composed music in response to mining art and the stories of miners and their families. There will be an interval when drinks and nibbles will be available during which people can chat with mining artist Norman Cornish’s son John and mining writer Sid Chaplin’s son Michael.
